Your measurements

Know what goes into your estimate

From surface area to whole boxes

Measure first. Check the pack second.

01

Add the areas

Multiply length by width for each rectangular floor or wall. Divide an L-shaped surface into rectangles that do not overlap. Only combine areas using the same tile.

02

Use actual tile dimensions

Tile face area is length × width. Divide the total surface area plus your chosen allowance by tile face area and round up to pieces. Grout gaps are not subtracted in this model.

03

Round up to boxes

Divide the piece count by the number of tiles in a box, then round up again. Check the supplier’s stated box coverage where nominal tile sizes differ from actual sizes.

How many tiles per square metre?

Examples use square tile faces and round up to whole pieces. Grout gaps are not subtracted. Pack rounding is separate: enter the actual number of pieces per box to calculate how many boxes to buy.

Common questions

How many 300 × 300 mm tiles cover a 3 × 2 m floor?

The floor is 6 m². With 10% extra, the estimate becomes 6.6 m². Each tile face is 0.09 m², so 6.6 ÷ 0.09 rounds up to 74 tiles. With 10 tiles per box, order eight boxes, containing 80 tiles.

Does this calculate grout or adhesive?

No. Adhesive coverage depends on the product, trowel, tile and surface. Grout also depends on joint width, depth and tile dimensions. Use the selected manufacturer’s coverage calculation for those materials.

Is 10% extra enough for every layout?

The example uses an editable 10%, not a universal requirement. Diagonal patterns, narrow edge cuts, breakages and repair stock can need more. Confirm the cutting layout before buying.

Can I use it for mosaic sheets or irregular tiles?

This tool uses rectangular tile face dimensions. For mosaics or irregular products, use their stated coverage to estimate packs with the flooring calculator instead of guessing a bounding rectangle.

Where can I check measuring advice?

Beaumont Tiles’ measuring guide explains measuring surfaces and checking quantities. Room & Root independently applies area and whole-box arithmetic; it is not affiliated with the retailer.
