Room & Root
About & calculation methods
Room & Root helps you estimate materials for painting, wallpapering, flooring, tiling, concrete, decking, fencing and garden projects. The calculators are free to use, work with metric and imperial measurements, and produce shopping lists you can print or copy.
Estimates you can inspect
We show the inputs behind each estimate. Coverage, product dimensions, coats, bag sizes and extra allowances stay editable. Example values help you try the tools; they are not a recommendation for a particular product or project.
Eight tools for everyday DIY planning
- Paint calculator: rectangular-room wall area, optional ceiling, openings, coats, coverage and whole-tin quantities.
- Wallpaper calculator: full-height strips for free-match or straight-match paper, with trim, pattern repeats and separate roll allocations by cut length.
- Soil and mulch calculator: rectangular and circular bed volume, optional extra allowance, bags and bulk quantities.
- Tile calculator: rectangular surface areas, tile face dimensions, allowance and whole boxes.
- Flooring calculator: combined room areas, cutting allowance and whole product packs.
- Concrete calculator: rectangular sections, finished depth, mixed yield per bag and bulk volume.
- Decking calculator: rectangular deck surfaces, board direction, rows, stock lengths and extra boards.
- Fence calculator: open straight runs, post centres, pickets, rail pieces and shared end-post adjustment.
Methods and references
The explanatory sections on each calculator link to the relevant manufacturer or university guidance. Unit conversions use the exact metric definitions of feet and inches and explicitly label US gallons. See NIST’s unit conversion reference.
These are independent tools. Referenced manufacturers and institutions do not sponsor, certify or endorse Room & Root. Check the instructions on your product before purchasing or cutting materials.
Check the real project
Measure carefully and compare the result with your supplier’s guidance. Unusual room shapes, surface condition, pattern placement and material compaction can require adjustments. These tools estimate quantities; they do not assess structural suitability or installation compliance.
