Buying flooring without guessing packs

Keep coverage and cutting allowance visible.

01

Measure every section

Add rectangular floor sections to cover alcoves, hallways and L-shaped rooms. Avoid overlapping areas. Include only sections that use the same product.

02

Read pack coverage

Use the square metres or square feet printed on the pack. That is more useful than counting planks by nominal size. Enter your own allowance for the intended layout.

03

Purchase whole packs

Divide total area including allowance by coverage per pack and round up. Purchased coverage is shown separately so you can see the extra caused by pack rounding.

How many flooring packs do I need?

Examples use 2.2 m² per pack and an editable 10% cutting allowance. Pack sizes vary by product. Herringbone, diagonal layouts and complicated cuts may require a different allowance.

Common questions

How many packs cover a 4 × 3 m room?

The floor is 12 m². With 10% extra, it needs 13.2 m² of coverage. A 2.2 m² pack gives exactly six packs, covering 13.2 m². A smaller pack or a larger allowance can change that count.

Can I combine rooms?

Yes, for one shared product. The calculator combines area before rounding to packs. Separate colours, plank sizes or flooring products should have separate estimates.

What about herringbone and diagonal flooring?

This is an area-and-pack estimate, not a plank cutting plan. Layouts with more cuts often need a different allowance. Check the product’s fitting guidance and room layout.

Does it include underlay and trims?

No. Check the flooring’s requirements for underlay, moisture barriers, adhesive, thresholds, expansion gaps and trims. Some products have attached underlay, so buying another layer may be inappropriate.

Where can I check the area method?

Bunnings’ flooring calculator uses room length and width and highlights additional supplies. Room & Root adds an editable allowance and whole-pack rounding.
